Ian is 19 years old and comes from a large family (seven brothers and three sisters, ranging in age from nine months to 22 years old).

Ian says it was hard growing up as there were so many kids fighting for affection all the time. This caused lots of arguments and on many occasion, physical fights. Ian says it must have been really hard for his mum as she was bringing them all up by herself and is sure that they must have all driven her up the wall.

Michael is 25 years old and is the youngest of seven brothers and sisters. He grew up on the Canterbury estate in Bradford and says that he got on well with his mum, but not so well with his dad.

Impact Living Case Study : Nissar

Nissar Bahadur, a local resident from a single parent family was one of Impact’s first trainee administration workers. He proved to be a talented, thoughtful and hardworking young man who made a lasting impression on everyone he had close contact with, both in his professional and personal life.

In early 2004 he developed a stomach complaint which progressively got worse. To everyone’s shock, Nissar was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer in November 2004. Despite this devastating news, he faced his illness with astounding dignity and courage, fighting as hard as he possibly could to beat it. During this time Nissar and his family and friends all required sensitive advice and support. Unfortunately, their experience was that the current service provision for young people and their families in a similar situation to himself was totally inadequate.

Sadly, Nissar lost his battle with cancer only a few months after diagnosis and passed away on 18 February 2005, aged just 19 years old. During his short life, Nissar had often expressed a dream to visit Disneyland , USA . Impact therefore decided to fund a two week, all-inclusive holiday to Florida for him, his sister, six of his closest friends and health and support staff.

The holiday proved to be the most memorable experience of Nissar’s young life, and his final wish was for Impact to support other young people affected by a terminal illness.

The Young Heroes Project:

Impact has dedicated the Young Heroes Project to Nissar’s memory. It will provide access to a personal support worker to give help and advice to young cancer patients and their family and friends. The project already has the use of a luxury villa, ‘Casa Nissar’, in Play Blanca, Lanzarote, which has been donated by a benefactor to allow young people to have recuperation time in a relaxed environment.

Aims & Objectives:

The Young Heroes Project was established by Impact to help and support young people who are personally suffering from a terminal illness or who are caring for a parent, guardian or sibling with a life-threatening disease or condition.

Impact aims:

To provide access to a trained personal support worker providing support and advice to an individual and their family or friends.

To provide a memorable holiday break for individuals and their family or friends, incorporating health and support staff

To provide bereavement counselling

To provide supported accommodation for young people

Case Study: Carly

Carly is 19 years old and is mother to 11 month old Nathan. She grew up in her family home with her mum, dad and two sisters. She remembers her childhood years as being happy (and says that she was a daddy’s girl).There were the normal sisterly fall outs but they never lasted long and were never too serious. Carly say that in the last year of school she was picked on by a few boys but coped with it until she finished her schooling.
